Two out of every five marriages break down in the UK today. The aim of this course is to help reverse the decline by enabling married couples to build a healthy relationship that will last a lifetime. Topics covered on the course include:

  • Building Strong Foundations
  • The Art of Communication
  • Resolving Conflict
  • The Power of Forgiveness; Parents and In-Laws
  • Good Sex
  • Love in Action
Who is the course for?
The Marriage Course is for any couple who wants to work together at their relationship whether they have been married two years or thirty.

The course is beneficial and enjoyable for those whose marriage is already strong. It also helps couples who are going through difficulties. They are able to re-open communication in a guided and constructive way. Some couples who are separated or divorced have used the course as a way of trying to get back together.

While the course emphasises and explains the unique nature of marriage, we also welcome couples if they have been living together for some time. Those who have been together for less than two years and are thinking of marriage are encouraged to come on our Marriage Preparation Course.

Although the course is based on Christian principles and led by Christians, it is very suitable for those with no Christian faith or church background.

Options RE-FOCCUS (F O C C U S)
As part of the course at Bromley Christian Centre we give each couple the option to complete a RE-FOCCUS questionnaire. Each couple can complete this in the comfort of their own home providing they have internet access. Once the questionnaire has been completed the couple can view the results online. You also have the option of working with the course leaders if you feel it would benefit your marriage.

The Marriage Course and BCC
With marriage in such decline, we believe it is important that we provide such support both for the church and the wider community. Couples who have attended the course have enjoyed the time set aside for each other and even after years of marriage have discovered new things about one another.

The design of the course
The course takes place over seven evenings. It is long enough to allow for real change in a relationship. Bad habits can be broken and good habits formed.

We meet at Bromley Christian Centre in Café 153. The atmosphere is relaxed with candlelight and background music. The evening starts with refreshments and the opportunity to meet with other couples. We continue with either a talk by the course leaders or a DVD. Once the talks start each couple has their own table where they can speak freely without being overheard throughout the evening. The course is very practical and confidential as there is no group discussion. However, if a couple does need extra support, then this can be discussed with the course leaders.

Costs
The course costs £35 per couple, which works out at £2.50 per head each evening. This is payable in advance of the course and the cost includes refreshments and materials.

STORY
"We had extremely different views about actually attending the marriage course. Me, as the man very reluctant - what point after 25 years of a sound marriage; Helen typically female, very positive — a superb opportunity to spend 'quality time' together away from TV and family pressures.

As the course unfolded, different subjects discussed, issues explored, understandings gained, scepticisms disappeared. Our final view – an opportunity not to be missed. A mutual learning process which can only add value to a marriage whatever stage it has reached."
